The Wa East District Assembly has officially disbursed GH¢428,516.30 to support 110 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) across the district. The first disbursement for 2026 includes start-up equipment, mobility aids, educational grants, and economic support designed to foster self-reliance and improve livelihoods.
The ceremony opened on a solemn note as the Hon. District Chief Executive (DCE) for Wa East Hon. Adamu Shaibu called for a moment of silence to honor the memory of Mr. Seidu Edward Kamwini, a prominent member and advocate within the local PWD community who passed away recently in Wa.
Addressing attendees at the event, the DCE Adamu Shaibu emphasized that the initiative goes beyond mere financial distribution, framing it as an investment in human dignity, economic self-reliance, and social inclusion.
“The motorbikes, wheelchairs, and artificial leg will improve mobility, while the deep freezers, sewing machines, and support for farming. will provide opportunities for beneficiaries to earn sustainable incomes,” the DCE stated.
The DCE expressed appreciation to His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama for the government’s renewed commitment to disability rights under the national “Reset Agenda.” The increased allocation through the DACF-PWD has strengthened the capacity of assemblies to deliver targeted, high-impact social interventions.
Hon. Adamu Shaibu urged the beneficiaries to utilize the items and capital responsibly to build sustainable ventures. Adding that, the Wa East District Assembly will conduct routine monitoring exercises to evaluate the performance of business ventures, educational progress, and the overall impact on beneficiaries’ quality of life.
Hon. Adamu also call on families, traditional authorities, community leaders, employers and the general public to continue supporting the dignity and inclusion of Persons with Disabilities.
“Disability must never become a barrier to education, employment, leadership, economic opportunity or participation in the development of our communities”.
Mr. Domonige Gordon, the president of Ghana Federation of Disability Wa East Branch speaking at the handing over ceremony noted that the equipment and seed funds would alleviate long-standing financial hardships and reduce their reliance on charity.
Beneficiaries, who received mobility aids, including wheelchairs and motorbikes, highlighted how the devices would transform their daily lives allowing them to travel independently to marketplaces, farms, and training centers.
Vocational recipients receiving sewing machines and deep freezers reaffirmed their determination to put the tools to immediate productive use to support their households and contribute to the economy.
The GH¢428,516.30 allocation funded through the Disability Component of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF-PWD) serves individuals with physical disabilities, visual impairments, hearing impairments, and epilepsy.
