Wiyaala Promoted the Smock Long Before it became Social Media hype,” Says Hon. Dzifa Gomashie”

Already celebrated globally for her electric performances and unapologetic African identity, Wiyaala’s appointment as Fugu Ambassador marks a new chapter in her journey of putting Ghanaian heritage on the global map.

The “Lioness of Africa,” Wiyaala, has officially added a majestic new title to her fierce cultural resume. The multi-award-winning Afro-pop singer and songwriter has been unveiled as Ghana’s official Fugu Ambassador, celebrating her decades-long commitment to promoting indigenous Ghanaian attire.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, the Member of Parliament and Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie, revealed that Wiyaala’s dedication to the traditional smock (Fugu) spans nearly two decades long before it became a trendy staple for social media promotion.

“I have known Wiyaala for close to twenty years, and for as long as I can remember, this lady has always worn Fugu, way before it became a matter of social media hype,” Hon. Gomashie noted warmly.

Hon. Gomashie emphasized that Wiyaala has consistently made Ghana proud on both local and international stages through her exceptional talent, authenticity, and unwavering dedication to her roots. She expressed strong confidence that the global icon will continue to use her voice, platform, and influence to showcase the beauty, creativity, and tourism potential of Ghana to the rest of the world.

Reflecting on the significance of the event, Hon. Gomashie highlighted how the ceremony demonstrates the power of culture in uniting people, preserving traditions, and creating sustainable opportunities for community development.

Following the official addresses, Hon. Dzifa Gomashie adorned Wiyaala in a gorgeous, custom-made traditional smock, officially commissioning her new role.

A representative of the elders of Funsi expressed their immense pride and assured the gathering of their full support. To ensure the sustainability of this cultural drive, the elders promised to collaborate with Wiyaala to launch an annual festival dedicated exclusively to promoting the Fugu industry and its local weavers.

In her acceptance speech, an emotional yet energized Wiyaala expressed her gratitude to the leaders and the nation. She promised to execute her duties with pride and assured the public that she would not disappoint the people of Ghana in her new role.
