Uniting Against Extremism: CAPECS Lead Stakeholders in Preventing Violent Extremism

Mr. Abu emphasized that; the people who are always excluded in decision making are usually the targeted groups when extremist organizations want to use them to commit crime.

In their bid to prevent the spread of violent extremism, a non-governmental organization (NGO) called Capacity Enhancement and community Support (CAPECS) has brought together stakeholders from various sectors to develop a comprehensive approach to countering violence extremism and to promote peace.

The stakeholders’ meeting brought together over 50 representatives from communities, government agencies, civil society organizations, and religious groups. The meeting aimed to educate stakeholders on the need for gender equality and social inclusion, and to also share ideas on best practices that will help develop a coordinated strategy to prevent violent extremism.

Abu Dokui Alhassan, Executive Director of (CAPECS) said “Since 2022, CAPECS has been working to ensure peace and stability in some districts in the upper west region. He hinted that Wa West and Sissala West in the course of their work, they have found out that most people leaving in the districts feel excluded.

The Executive Director also mentioned that when it comes to decision making, development agencies like the district assemblies need to consciously engage young people to also share ideas.

He further stressed that, Wa east district was identified as one of the conflict hot-spots and CAPECS needed to expand the project to cover the district.

The NGO, according to the executive director, has been working in the upper west region for several years, focusing on community development and social cohesion. However, with the growing threat of violent extremism, the organization recognizes the need to adapt its strategy and engage with a broader range of stakeholders in the Wa East District.

Participants who had the privilege to attend the meeting underscore the importance of sharing information, resources, and expertise to develop effective strategies for preventing violent extremism.

The meeting also highlighted the need for collaboration and coordination among stakeholders.
