The general secretary of the illustrious football event in the upper west region dubbed “South Sissala Unity Games”, Fatawu Babugu Dumah, has hinted that management may launch the tournament in September 2024 for the games to kick start.
The tournament which was introduced in 2015 with the tagline, “Unifying the people for development” has consistently hosted football games nine times with twelve communities in the Wa east district and around the Sissala enclave to compete for a cash award and trophy.
According to the general secretary, the executive board may also raise the number of community participants from 12.
“The way so many communities are showing interest in participating in this year’s South Sissala unity games, we may allow more communities to participate instead of the usual 12 communities.”
“Since it is all about unity, it is important to allow them to participate” he said.
The main purpose of the South Sissala Unity Games was to promote talent and bring communities together for peaceful co-existence.
Fatawu Babugu further revealed that per the importance the organizers attached to the event, management intend on bringing at least four premier league and division one coaches to scout for talents.
“In order to highlight the team’s morale during the competition, we may also add certificates of honour to the current awards, best team of the tournament, top scorer, best goal keeper, and well behaved team of the tournament.”
However the winner for last year’s tournament bagged home Gh₵1000, jerseys, and footballs.
For the past eight years, the games’ main sponsor has been the Lawyer Abu Juan’s Foundation. The executive board of the games receives funding from the foundation to carry out its operations, which includes purchasing football kits for the participating teams.
