UPPER WEST: Sissala West MP Honors Teachers and Education Stakeholders on Workers’ Day

"For a teacher to teach, they must be mentally and physically well," he noted. "Whether you are a farmer, a teacher, or a politician, you need good health. Very soon, we will extend this recognition to our dedicated health workers."

The Member of Parliament for the Sissala West Constituency and Deputy Minister for Communications, Hon. Mohammed Adams Sukparu, has recognized and rewarded hardworking teachers and key education stakeholders for their invaluable contributions to the district.

The awards ceremony, held on May 1, 2026, to coincide with Workers’ Day, honored retired educators, active teachers, Ghana Education Service (GES) staff, and outstanding students for their unwavering dedication to academic excellence.

Addressing the gathering, Hon. Sukparu explained that the initiative aims to appreciate those playing a vital role in elevating the quality of education in the Sissala West District. He emphasized that teachers remain the backbone of national development and must be motivated to reach their full potential.

Reflecting on his personal journey, the MP shared a moving tribute to the educators who shaped his life:

“I grew up in Buoti. Many of you know what it means to grow up in a small community where resources are few and opportunities are hard to come by,” the MP remarked. “But I had teachers who showed up every day and believed in me. It was through education that doors opened for me that would otherwise have remained shut. I cannot separate my journey from the teachers who walked it with me.”

Hon. Sukparu also acknowledged the interconnectedness of community development, announcing plans to extend similar honors to healthcare professionals in the coming weeks.

“For a teacher to teach, they must be mentally and physically well,” he noted. “Whether you are a farmer, a teacher, or a politician, you need good health. Very soon, we will extend this recognition to our dedicated health workers.”

The Upper West Regional Education Director, Madam Alice Aberee-Inga, urged parents to take a more active role in their children’s upbringing, noting that character formation begins at home.

“Monitor your children’s activities both at home and in school,” she advised. “Visit the schools, check their performance, and demand accountability. Let us work together to keep our children in school.”

Madam Aberee-Inga also issued a stern warning against examination malpractice, describing it as a threat to the value of Ghanaian certifications. She cautioned that any teacher found engaging in such practices would face the full rigors of the law, including dismissal, and urged parents not to facilitate such dishonesty.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of awards to over 20 individuals, including Circuit Supervisors, GES officers, and students.

The awardees received Motor bikes, 40 inch flat screen TV’s, Lenovo laptops, deep freezers, and cash prices

The Overall Best Teacher, Mr. Adamu Balubuo Yussif, expressed his gratitude to the MP, stating that the gesture serves as a powerful validation of the teaching profession.

“When leaders value education, communities grow stronger,” Mr. Yussif said. “To my fellow teachers, let this award remind us that the work we do in small classrooms echoes across Ghana. I pledge to use this recognition to mentor young teachers and continue making my classroom a place of hope.”
