Wa East: Enrolment Set to Rise as Funsi’s Only District Assembly School Gets Major Face-Lift

"Our goal is to ensure that no child in Wa East has to study in a life-threatening environment," the DCE stated.

In a significant boost to education, the Wa East District Assembly on January 20, 2026,has officially handed over the newly renovated Funsi D/A Primary School to the school’s authorities for use. The facility, which is the only District Assembly school structure in the district capital, had languished in a state of severe dilapidation for over a decade.

The school which was establish in 2015 has since not seen any face –lift until date.

The handing over marks a turning point for students and teachers who have long struggled with the deteriorating infrastructure.

Speaking to Pulung News, the District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Adamu Shaibu, revealed that the project was funded through the District Assembly Common Fund under its “Legacy Projects” component. Adding that the renovation cost a little over 300,000 Ghana Cedis, representing 20% allocation of the legacy fund to restore the building’s integrity.

Hon. Shaibu noted that since taking office just a few months ago, his administration has prioritized education, already completing renovations at Jumo Primary, Kpaglahi, Kpalamuna and Funsi as well.

“Our goal is to ensure that no child in Wa East has to study in a life-threatening environment,” the DCE stated.

The DCE also mentioned Specific challenges the Funsi D/A school faces which include: Lack of Water, and lack of dedicated Junior High School (JHS) or Kindergarten (KG) blocks. He therefore pledges to support the school with water source and another project when the assembly mobilizes resources.

Despite the celebration, the DCE acknowledged that the work is far from over. He highlighted that Funsi as a district capital faces a critical shortage of educational infrastructure, which often discourages government staff from staying in the district because they lack quality schooling for their children.

In his speech the DCE also stated that the Member of Parliament for the Wa East Constituency Dr. Godfred Seidu Jasew has donated 40 dual desks to the Funsi D/A school to improve student comfort and retention.

Hon. Shaibu promised that as the Assembly mobilizes more resources, these gaps will be addressed to provide immediate relief.

While handing the keys to the PTA Chairman, Mr. Yahaya Mimuni Abdul Rahaman, the district education director for Wa East urged the community to take ownership of the facility. “Protect this building, When the Assembly sees that you care for what you have, they will be motivated to bring the JHS and KG blocks you are asking for,” he advised.

The Head teacher, Mr. Jacob Sumani Kpiasi, expressed profound gratitude to the DCE for the great job done, noting that student enrolment had been declining because parents were afraid to send their children to a crumbling building. He expressed confidence that with the fresh renovation, the student population would see a swift increase.

The handover ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials, including the District Education Director, Mr. Yahaya Mimuni Abdul Rahaman, the District Coordinating Director, the District Chief Executive Hon. Adamu Shaibu and some officers from the district education directorate and assembly.
