UNDP To Hold A 3 Day Training For Journalists In Northern Ghana On Hate Speech And Counter Narratives

UNDP is undertaking a regional project called Preventing and Responding to Violent Extremism in the Atlantic Corridor (2023–2025).

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will host Journalists in a three – day training in Tamale with the objective to raise awareness on the use of conflict-sensitive reporting and to strengthen capacities on how to disseminate positive counter messages during the upcoming election campaign period and beyond.

With the aim of preventing and addressing the immediate catalysts of radicalization leading to violent extremism, the UNDP is undertaking a regional project called Preventing and Responding to Violent Extremism in the Atlantic Corridor (2023–2025) against this backdrop.

A key component of the project focuses on countering hate speech and strengthening the dissemination of alternative narratives to hate speech. With the upcoming presidential elections in Ghana in December 2024, the surge in hate speech and polarizing narratives in the media poses a significant risk in view of escalating political tensions.

Journalists, bloggers, and other media professionals are key players in the effort to promote a fact-based public discourse that fosters social cohesion, peace, and stability.

The training will start on Monday 27th to Wednesday 29th May, 2024.

UNDP works in about 170 countries and territories, helping to eradicate poverty, reduce inequalities and exclusion, and build resilience so countries can sustain progress. As the UN’s development agency, UNDP plays a critical role in helping countries achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

As a public organization entrusted with donor funds and committed to supporting developing economies, UNDP also works to improve access to quality assured supplies in a cost effective and reliable way.
