Residents of Funsi bemoans the inapt dumping of rubbish in the township

This serves as a wake-up call for Funsi residents to address the improper disposal of rubbish and work towards keeping their community clean and healthy.

The inappropriate dumping of rubbish has increasingly become a pressing issue for some residents of Funsi, with many expressing their disappointment over the growing quandary of littering throughout the town. During an interview with Pulung News, several residents shared their concerns.

Mr. Umar, a teacher at Funsi Senior High School, appreciates many aspects of Funsi but is particularly troubled by the prevalent issue of rubbish being improperly discarded. He shared, “I’ve been here since November and admire everything about Funsi, yet I feel we must make a greater effort to manage our waste appropriately. Littering alongside the roads is a problem, and I believe we should identify suitable places for disposing of rubbish rather than just dropping it carelessly.”

Moreover, some residents attribute the problem to inadequate waste disposal infrastructure, such as a lack of containers and bins. They also mention that some residents send their children to dispose of rubbish, which often results in trash being left beside containers rather than inside them.

Bakuori Hassan, a local resident, voiced his concerns, stating, “I urge the authorities to equip the town with more bins. It would significantly help if major areas were provided with proper waste containers.”

Another resident Kpiasi Dauda echoed his sentiment, noting, “You will find containers in some areas intended for rubbish disposal, but people often send children to take rubbish there. Unfortunately, because the containers are too high, the rubbish ends up on the floor next to the container rather than inside.”

In a related effort to address this issue, Ghanaian musician Wiyaala, known as the Lioness of Africa, took action by cleaning a waste heap along with friends visiting from Poland. In a video posted on her official Facebook page on February 19th, 2024, she expressed disappointment over the intentional dumping of rubbish and the negative impact it has on public health due to frequent outbreaks of illness.

“My dear people of Funsi, every time we host visitors, they notice the rubbish and express their dismay. Some may perceive me as overly concerned, but visitors find it unpleasant to see rubbish in front of houses,” Wiyaala remarked. She also emphasized the importance of constructing toilets in homes to prevent open defecation, urging locals to take pride in their surroundings and maintain a clean environment.

Additionally, a visitor from Poland, speaking anonymously to Pulung FM, highlighted that residents shouldn’t need reminders to clean their surroundings. They expressed their willingness to help with cleaning due to the importance of maintaining a tidy environment.

This serves as a wake-up call for Funsi residents to address the improper disposal of rubbish and work towards keeping their community clean and healthy.
