Funsi D/A basic school: A forgotten home of learning

The school which was built in 2015 was a symbol of progress and opportunity, providing quality education to hundreds of students in the Funsi area.

Funsi D/A Basic School, once a beacon of education and community pride, now stands as a testament to neglect and disinvestment. The dilapidated building, which is the only district assembly school in the Funsi township, has fallen into a state of disrepair, posing danger to school pupils’.

The school which was built in 2015 was a symbol of progress and opportunity, providing quality education to hundreds of students in the Funsi area. Its structure and environment was a hope for learning. However, due to the lack of maintenance, and shifting of priorities have taken it to the level of disrepair.

In an interview with Pulung FM, some PTA, SMC executives and teachers of the school has registered their displeasure at the state of the school, and called on government through the Wa east district Assembly as a matter of urgency to come to their aid by renovating the school.

According to the PTA chairman of the school Mr. Marifa Hassan Bamwang, the school’s doors, windows and some parts of the roof has been ripped off living the students to the mercy of the weather and other dangerous animals. He also added that, the paint of the building has faded out making the school unattractive.

The chairman also revealed that the six unit classroom block which houses the primary, JHS and the KG pupil’s is congested. He said the J.H.S which was introduced in 2022 is now in its third academic year without its own block.

The headmaster of the J.H.S Mr. Kadiri Daud, said the JHS together with the primary and KG has been combined and it’s affecting teaching and learning he stressed. Mr. Kadiri further states that the school seriously needs a separate JHS block to ease the congestion in the primary. He therefore appeals to the district authorities and benevolent individuals and organizations to come to their aid.

Mr. Kpiasi Sumani Dintie Jacob the headmaster of the primary school who spoke to Pulung news mentioned that, the school has student enrolment of over 300 but has no water source. He revealed that students walk about half a kilometer to town in order to get access to drinking water.

The headmaster also hinted that most of the students always end up not returning to the school early and this, according to him is affecting teaching and learning.

The PTA and SMC executives hinted that plans are far advanced for parents to contribute monies to put up a temporal shed and a kitchen that will be serving the Kindergarten. They therefore appeal to the Wa East District Assembly as well as NGO’s and other benevolent individuals to come to the aid of the school.
